We're Liam and Belle Weed — Utah siblings who have been playing in the mountains our whole lives, and backcountry skiing since we were about ten years old.
Belle ski raced competitively, then transitioned to ski instructing and studying outdoor product design and development at Utah State.
Liam spent time guiding mountaineering expeditions on Denali and Rainier, founded Bear River Mountain Guides, and instructs for the Utah Avalanche Center.
The idea for the poles came from goofing around. Belle imagined personalized ski poles that could be as silly as a stack of pancakes or as serious as all black. Liam wanted more places to push off on the uphill — after noticing that a lot of the senior guides at RMI made their poles super short so they could use them like a cane. It felt way more efficient. And knowing that skiers choke down on their poles all the time anyway, the question became: what if the pole was actually designed for that? After a lot of experimenting, testing, and trial and error, the twIIgs poles were born.
We came up with the name twIIgs on the same day we had the idea — during a ski tour with our whole family. On the car ride back, we were talking about poles and what we could call them. We were laughing, connected, just a happy family that had gone on an adventure together. Someone suggested "twig" or "twigs" — probably our dad — and we all thought it was really funny, but also kind of cool.
That's the energy we want twIIgs to be built on. To us, those are the moments backcountry skiing is really about — whether it's with family, friends, or your dog. The mountains have this magical way of connecting us to the people we experience them with, through shared effort, through play, and joy. We hope that something that looks as different — maybe even a little crazy — as our pole helps you take yourself a little less seriously and be more open to that magic. And enjoy the uphill a little more. These are by far the best poles we have ever used and we are excited to share them with you.
